The Complete Guide to Candle Wax Types: Burn Time, Performance & What Sets Them Apart
Share
Understanding what's inside your candle changes everything about how you experience it.
🥥 Coconut Wax
Burn Time: 50–80 hours (one of the longest)
How It Works: Derived from cold-pressed coconut oil, coconut wax has a low melt point and burns slowly and evenly. It binds exceptionally well with fragrance oils, releasing scent gradually even before the flame is lit (called "cold throw").
Why It Stands Out: Clean-burning, toxin-free, and sustainably sourced. It's the premium choice for luxury candles and the one we use at Surprise Elements.
🌺🥥 Apricot & Coconut Blend
Burn Time: 50–75 hours
How It Works: This premium blend combines apricot kernel wax and coconut wax, two of the finest natural waxes available. The apricot wax adds a silky-smooth texture and exceptional scent throw, while the coconut wax contributes a slow, even burn and clean finish. Together they create a beautifully balanced candle wax.
Why It Stands Out: Best of both worlds outstanding cold and hot scent throw, a creamy aesthetic, long burn time, and fully natural, vegan, and toxin-free. This blend is increasingly favored by luxury candle makers for its superior performance and clean credentials.
🌱 Soy Wax
Burn Time: 35–50 hours
How It Works: Made from hydrogenated soybean oil, soy wax is a popular natural alternative to paraffin. It burns cooler and slower than paraffin, which extends burn time.
Why It Stands Out: Biodegradable and renewable. However, most commercial soy wax is a blend and may not be 100% pure. Hot throw (scent while burning) can be weaker than coconut wax.
🐝 Beeswax
Burn Time: 60–80 hours
How It Works: A natural byproduct of honey production, beeswax has the highest melt point of all natural waxes. It burns very slowly and emits negative ions that can help purify the air.
Why It Stands Out: Naturally sweet honey scent, dripless, and long-lasting. Less ideal for heavily scented candles as it doesn't hold fragrance as well.
🛢️ Paraffin Wax
Burn Time: 25–45 hours
How It Works: A petroleum byproduct, paraffin is the most widely used candle wax globally. It has a high fragrance load capacity and excellent hot throw.
Why It Stands Out: Affordable and widely available, but releases toxins (toluene, benzene) when burned. Not aligned with clean or eco-conscious living.
🌸 Palm Wax
Burn Time: 40–60 hours
How It Works: Derived from palm oil, palm wax creates a unique crystalline or feathered finish on candles. It's hard and burns cleanly.
Why It Stands Out: Beautiful aesthetic, but sustainability is a major concern palm farming is linked to deforestation. Ethical sourcing is critical.
🧪 Paraffin-Soy or Coconut Blends
Burn Time: Varies (30–60 hours depending on ratio)
How It Works: Many commercial candles use blended waxes to balance cost, scent throw, and burn performance.
Why It Stands Out: Can be a middle ground, but transparency in labeling matters. Always check what percentage is natural vs. synthetic.
